A STUDY ON THE POSTAXIAL POLYDACTYLY OF THE FOOT

Abstract
Postaxial polydactyly is the most common congenital anomaly of the foot and many of the cases are associated with syndactyly. Although the involved digit is not functionally significant, the patients are generally concerned about the appearance of their feet.
There are many different view on the classification of foot polydactyly.
And there is little information on the selection of resetting extratoe and the necessity of free skin graft especially in cases with polysyndactyly.
22 feet of 20 postaxial polyactyly patients were classified by Nakamura¢¥s method and they were operated according to classified type and X -ray fingdings.
Selection of toes for resection and the necessity for skin graft were studied. The results were as follows.
1) The most common type of postaxial polydactyly of the foot is the Ic type.
2) The most common X-ray finding of Postaxial polydactyly of the foot is duplication from the proximal phalangeal bone.
3). In cases of type I , we have good results by resecting the extradigit whose alignment and growth were poor.
4) In cases of type II , we have good results by resetting the medial extradigit with simultaneous reconstruction of the web space.
5) In cases of type BE, it is necessary to combine with the free skin graft after division of syndactyly.
